Saturday was our day off
and we began our devotionals an hour later than usual. After another breakfast
of the world's best oatmeal, we settled down to do whatever we wanted. Some of
us went for a walk around the neighborhood of the mission house. Some went to
sleep to stave off a cold coming on. Some played games with the children that
are always hanging around the area. It was a very restful time in the Lord and
after that we had a lunch of squash soup.
The
story behind squash soup is: when the slaves of the French were working the
fields, they refused to allow the slaves to partake of the squash because they
thought that it was a delicacy reserved for only the plantation owners. With
success the revolt of 1801-03 the newly freedmen decided that every New Year's
Day that would partake of the squash to commemorate their freedom from the
oppressors. The soup that comes out of this is very tasty. Besides the pureed
squash, there is potatoes, cabbage, carrots, beef and even a hot pepper or two.
Quite the tasty morsel for any mouth.
After
the meal we headed out to Gelee Beach for an afternoon of fun in the sun.
This was the first sunny day since Monday. No rain seemed to be coming our way.
It was a true sun-day. All the wash of the previous week was being dried in
every available spot. The water was very warm and we arrive there at high tide.
Quite the nice afternoon of frolicking on the beach. Of course the vendors
showed up with fresh coconut and breadfruit. If you've never had fresh coconut
it is nothing like you buy in the states. The milk is not very sweet and the
meat of the fruit has the consistency and taste of poached egg whites. You have
to develop a taste for it. On a personal note: the author likes coconut in any
form, but fresh. That includes toasted, shaved, even in Almond Joys or Mounds.
We
headed out to the Saturday evening worship and found the church full of people.
We were not expecting this. We thought that we would be able to play like we
normally do on these nights and that people walking by could come into the
church. But on Friday it was announced that we would be giving a concert for the
church. We played for a little over an hour and then the Bethesda worship team
stepped in with Pastor Joseph-Lubin in the lead. The place was rocking and full
of much energy. We headed out by eight so that the people could go home in time
to get back to the church by seven a.m. for Bible study.
We had a spaghetti dinner along with a Haitian Pizza before heading of to our rooms for the night.
