Here is where we begin. Our first journey to
Les Cayes Haiti as a congregation. This is the first trip that Bible Rock has
been the sponsor. We are excited as we have 8 from Bible Rock along with Pastor
A.A. Oliver of Hamden. We are excited to see what the Lord has in store for us.
We have seen the enemy rear his head in order to disrupt the trip, but as we
have prayed and sought His face, He has turned "lemons into
lemonade."
Praise God for His mercy and grace.
Our missionaries on this trip will be David, Linda and Cody Scovel, Arne Yaghsizian, Bill Bowe, Joe Cahill, Amy Dillard, and Carl Therriault. You can check out Cody's day-to-day journal on his own separate page by clicking on one of the above links.
We are heading don to Les Cayes to teach the pastors of the area on the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. The last time the subject of the Holy Spirit was breached, there was almost a riot outside and rocks were being thrown up onto the tin roof. We trust that after being filled with the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, they will then be confident in the spirit to lead their own people in that fullness. Please pray for us as we are also ministering at outlying churches along with doing some street evangelism.
II Timothy 2:2
The things which you have heard from me in the presence of
many witnesses,
entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
We begin the journey at 5:30 a.m. on Monday the 20th
of October. We all met at first Baptist Church in Wallingford, CT. From there we
all loaded up the three vans that would carry all of us with luggage to JFK. Hit
traffic just out side of Bridgeport, which is very unusual for our trip down to
Haiti. But after prayers to the Heavenly Father were said, the traffic began to
flow and we moved right along even as we approached the city.
At
the airport, we made it through the check-in, had a small breakfast at au bon
pain and proceeded to the terminal. Will waiting for the plane Pastor Oliver
took out one of the guitars that we were carrying down to Les Cays. Carl
Therriault pulled out the one he brought to play and they had an impromptu jam
session in the jazz vein. It turns out that P. Oliver is an accomplished jazz
guitarist who has played professional. He was able to teach Carl some jazz
chords and “licks” to go along with the southern rock influence in Carl’s
playing.
Our flight was late in boarding and when got out onto the runway we had to return to the terminal to unload an ailing passenger who needed some help and was flying alone. So after a two-hour delay, we took off for a smooth flight to the island of Hispaniola.
As
we got of the plane, Cody declared; “I am in another country, I am in
Haiti.” He was quite excited. We cleared customs and collected our baggage and
then loaded up the van with the help of some locals. There are always men to
grab your luggage and lend a hand for a price.
Jolince was once again our driver. Zamore from Pastor John-Phares’ home also joined us. Sandra who is a missionary from First Baptist Wallingford joined us from the Dominican Republic (DR) along with a brother in Christ named Wilson. So loaded up we moved on out for the 150 mile, 6 hour trip to Les Cayes.
We sang many songs into the night until most of us went to sleep. A warm welcome and a spaghetti dinner awaited us as we arrived at P. Jean-Phares’ home in Les Cayes. It was good to see P. Jean-Phares’ wife Gardinet. We took a tour of the mission house as we all received out accommodations with joy. The fruit of the past years labors.
