Cody's Haiti Trip

October 20-27th, 2003

HaitiEmbark2.JPG (155621 bytes)Bonjour! , This is Cody and I’m updating my web page. I’m sorry for the lateness of my entry. Today I got up at 4:00 am and left for airport at 5:00 but my flight left for Haiti at 11:30. On the way to JFK airport I was car sick for the whole ride up. At the customs check point. The metal detector for no apparent reason kept beeping me. When we got to Port-au-prince I stepped of the cold plane to a 90 degrees island. On the car drive to Les Cayes It was so hot in the car that we drove with the car doors open, and guess what. I got to sit by the door! We went over the mountains with the car and there were all these crazy drivers and huge potholes all over the road. We stopped to eat our diner that we had packed and it tasted great, I also bought some sugar cane and it was so re-energizing and pure sugar. When we got half way up the mountain there were all these dogs the size of rats or smaller and they kept chasing us and barking. As I mentioned before there were crazy drivers and the side affect was that we saw a person that got ran over. As we neared Les Cayes we passed Lots of crystal clear beaches with nothing wrong with them. The entrance to Les Cayes was amazing; it was light up fully and on top there was a huge 500 representing the 500 years Les Cayes has been around. Tune in tomorrow for another update.

 Tuesday

CodyNose.JPG (149187 bytes)How is it up there? It is still 90 degrees down here. Today we had the best oatmeal I have ever had. It had real cinnamon in it and also it had star anise in it which is my dads' favorite herb thing. We went around town today and looked around and I had some sugar cane! Sugar cane looks like wood and fells wet, but the way you eat it is you bite off a piece and chew it. The texture is like wood but when you chew it a high concentrate of sugar juice comes pouring out. When the stuff in your mouth has no flavor left you just spit it out. Today I made friends with our hosts’ 3-year-old son Jonathan. As we got later into the day a humongous rainstorm began to move in and the temperature began to drop dramatically and the wind speed started to pick up. For lunch we had macaroni & cheese with soda. Do you guys no how you have plastic bottles for soda? Well down here it comes in half liter bottles and the soda tastes so much better. When I went to bed it was raining cats and dogs so I slept with earplugs. See you in a week.

Wednesday

CodShowr1.JPG (148213 bytes)Ughhh! Today I got up to a still raining day and found out that I was sleep talking. All the showers were taken up so I decided to take a shower in the rain on the balcony with my swimsuit on. But my dad decided he would be funny and snapped some pictures and put them on the website so now I’m really angry with him. For breakfast we had omelets with ham and cheese and oranges as a side dish. But I found out that the oranges that come from Florida are really dyed that and there really lime green.

Thursday

ThuCodiak.JPG (138090 bytes)Today I had the really good oatmeal again and it tasted even better than it did before. I also had the (green) oranges, which is an oxymoron, and I had pineapples. I made friends with our host’s son Jonathan who has more energy each day. Today he got me up early and made me play piggyback and wheelbarrow for an hour straight non-stop. I have a fan that I use to cool down and Jon became fascinated with it and used that for about 20 minutes. Jon has two really small puppies that are about 5-8 inches long and about 5 inches tall but they had no names so I named one of them scrappy and I still have yet to name the other one. This street vendor came by our house and was selling machetes so we bought 2 of them, one for me and another for my brother. The blades are 22’’ log and the handle is about 4 inches long.  It was really hot that night so I slept on top of the covers.

Friday

FriCody1.JPG (149883 bytes)When I woke up this morning I had about 60 bug bites on my limbs but my right arm alone had about 52 of them. When I got up I looked at my machete. This morning I forgot that I had devotions and I was hoping that he wouldn’t make me do them but He did. I didn’t want to do this and I was fighting with my self to do it but I was forced to do it. For breakfast we had eggs with pineapple’s, bananas, and rolls. At the church a  demonized girl bit an usher and fought with him.  In the afternoon she threw a full juice bottle at me and it it exploded on the wall. I finished up my homework and played with these kids Ezekiel, James and Lubno once back at home.

Saturday

SatCodyBush2.JPG (154295 bytes)Beach day! Today is going to be great today we are going to Gelee beach. We had the oatmeal again today and it was piping hot! We went to the beach at 2:00 p.m. and the water was great. It was turquoise and clear. we had coconuts that that the beach dealers had cut for us. The coconut milk was disgusting and the insides were like egg whites. After we came back we were wiped out and slept for a couple hours after that we went to church to worship like we do on Saturdays and I was so tired I almost fell asleep.

Sunday

Today I got up really late and almost slept through to breakfast For break fast we had pineapple, bananas, rolls and eggs. I had really tart lemonade that almost make me lose my voice. It was so hot in church that I almost had a heat stroke until they bought out some fans to cool us down. I went to church with my friends Ezekiel, James and their sister. When I got home I caught two geckos and one skink.
