Well, here we are once again her on the tropical island of
Haiti. Our very large group of 8 from White
Oak Baptist Church of Wallingford and 7 from BRM arrived safely at the
Port au Prince International Airport yesterday afternoon. Our journey through
JFK was the quickest and least hurried of all the flights that I have ever
taken. We had plenty of time to relax and eat at au bon pain since the
airline was not serving us a meal on our flight. I guess they are trying to cut
as many costs as they can.
Everything went very smooth as we gathered all our extra bags, and went to meet Pastor Jean-Phares who came to meet us with the vans. We were out of Port-au-Prince within 1-1/2 hours which is quite fast. Sometimes in the past it has taken upwards of 3-1/2 hours. From there the rest of the trip to les Cayes took only 4-1/2 hours. It was quite a joy with only one minor glitch. We were stopped in a small town west of Miragoin, by some local police. They were checking ID's and cargo. We were stopped because the gray van has tinted windows. BUT, by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ we were let through after only a few questions.
After the traditional arrival meal of Spaghetti and meat sauce, the tired bunch of us headed out to the hotel from Pastor Jean's home. When we got to our hotel, or what should have been our hotel, we found that our rooms had been given away, and there was now "no room at the inn." This did not make us very happy being so late at night. But we headed off to The Concorde Hotel, which was only around the corner or two. Nice accommodations, nice proprietors.
This morning we arrived at the work site at the church
only to see that they were not completely ready for us. So, we all headed out to
Pastor Jean's were we would continue work on the Missions House.
This is the second floor of his residence that should be able to handle upwards
of forty missionaries or guests when completed. It took us some time to get
going and organized, but then we really got some work done. We cleaned the work
site which was messy with concrete pieces and wood. Some of us also helped lay
the bricks and things began to take shape.
In order to become more efficient at the work site we needed to take the rest of the afternoon and go swimming at the pool of the hotel that "stiffed" us. Pastor Lubin had arranged this due to the proprietor having made the mistake of giving our rooms away the night before. It was a needed break that refreshed us and brought about some good camaraderie for the team.
That night at the service Pastor Mark
taught us on what it meant to follow Jesus. He covered the record in the Gospel
of John, Chapter 6, where Jesus had fed the multitudes and people were following
Him, only because they had been fed.
"Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
John 6.26
The question to us is then why do
we follow Him. Because of the promise that He would give us things or just feed
us in the physical or because of the hope of eternal life. There were a few
salvations in the crowd. Two that came to the church to receive Christ as their
savior. Beni swa l'eternel!
