For the past couple of years we have been partnering with other churches in the area to send missionaries and supplies to the country of Haiti in the Caribbean. These mission trips are co-sponsored by Bethesda Evangelical Mission and First Baptist Church of Wallingford CT. Our co-leaders have been Rev. Jean-Lubin Beaucejour of BEM and Rev. Bill Huegel of First Baptist.

haiti-airport.jpg (318687 bytes)The August trip had eight missionaries representing four different congregations. The object of this trip was different than the ones of the past in that we would be teaching a seminar on the Book of Revelation for pastors and students. Previous trips incorporated much physical work along with services in the evening.

stake_bed.jpg (1309798 bytes)After our afternoon arrival at the Port au Prince Airport we were surprised to find that our ride for the next 6 hours would be a Daihatsu "stake-bed" truck. Some of the women looked at this with amazement. But what better way to get a taste of what Haitians go through daily. We stopped two hours outside of the city at the home of Pastor Joel Beaucejour in Leogane. It is only 45 miles from the airport and the traffic wasn't "bad." After a short rest we resumed the 125 mile miles to Les Cayes on the southern coast of Hispaniola Island. [composed of both Haiti and the Dominican republic]

It  began to rain as we headed into the mountains. we through a tarp over us as we moved along. The moonlit night was beautiful as we passed the coast by St Louis du Sud. The are building an international airport there so travelers won't have to go through PaP. It is only 45 minutes from Les Cayes. Pray that the work is smooth an speedy. It will energize this area of the island immensely.

school_site.jpg (1174049 bytes)Before the Seminar on the Book of Revelation, we toured the school construction site out behind the Bethesda Evangelical Church. It is scheduled to be four stories high with the top floor being the 24 hour prayer room. It will accommodate hundreds of children of all grades. This is a needed project for this area.

p_bill_preach.jpg (515196 bytes)The seminar for pastors and students began on Tuesday morning. We were refreshed because we had gotten into Les Cayes early in the evening about 9 p.m. Pastor Bill Huegel began with the overview of the Book of Revelation. Pastor David Scovel of Bible Rock was going to cover the "Seven Letters to the Churches." This was a wonderful time with the students as their hunger drew the Word of God out of us.

haiti_pastors.jpg (1181320 bytes)During the week we decided to feed the students so that they would not have to go out for a period and then come back. Many had traveled long distances each day and they had nowhere to go for that period of time. You can't just go and hang out at the nearest Micky D's while you waited. This was a great blessing for them and the children that showed up to see if their were leftovers. Many of us did not eat much so the children could be taken care of in their need.

david_preach.jpg (636053 bytes)Each night we had revival meetings in the church that were very lively. The Spirit of the Living God was definitely moving. Both Pastors Bill and Dave both had a couple chances to minister the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the congregation. Sister Joann Beaucejour also got the crowd fired up about the Holy Spirit on Thursday night. The team was able to pray for people after the message every night. People were very blessed by the messages and the ministry. This even though the English message must be translated into Creole, the language of the people.

Pastor Lubin preached a rousing, Holy Spirit filled message an Sunday a.m. The congregation was treated to a move of the Holy Spirit in exhorting them to overcome the world by following the things of the LORD.

That Sunday night we were treated to many different worship teams that really brought out the ethnic flair and traditions of the island. These were all part of the celebration coinciding with the dedication anniversary of the church building. There were groups and people from many different congregations, represented in a unifying service.

happy_jeans.jpg (671894 bytes)After many trials and delays, a 15 passenger van that was donated by the Westfield Evangelical Free Church of Westfield, MA was released from customs. It had been at the port since April of this year. Praise God for His hand of mercy in the midst of a perverse generation of men. This van will be a great blessing to the church and the people of the area. Both Jean-Pharez Beaucejour (the Pastor of the Bethesda mission) and Pastor Jean-Lubin were ecstatic over the release of the vehicle. Beni swa l'Eternal "Blessed be the name of the LORD."

haiti_class.jpg (730928 bytes)The Seminar ended on Friday afternoon as a resounding success. The students all filled out a questionnaire about how they thought the class went. Many wanted to share about how it touched their lives. They wanted to do this again next year and would let others know about. May the Lord work in the hearts of those who will present the Gospel to minister the Word of God not in word only but in power and authority.

Saturday, a clinic was run for the people of the church to received health care. For two Haitian dollars (40 cents) they could see our missionary nurse, Sister Jana McCain. Assisted by Nurse Betsy of Les Cayes and Sister-in-law Debbie McCain, they ministered to young and old alike. Over 100 people received care and medicine to help them heal up. Pray was also made available to those who wanted it. Spirit, soul and body all received ministry during the four hours that the clinic was run.

van_swim.jpg (1088765 bytes)After the clinic we headed out to Gelee (Frigid?) Beach west of town to go for a dip in the Caribbean. The water temp had to be close to 90 degrees. Nothing compared to the 96+ in the Hotel pool. We searched for shells and sampled a Haitian delicacy called Tom-tom (smashed breadfruit) with crab sauce. What a great relaxing day in the sun. Too bad so many of the beaches are littered with garbage. This could truly be an island paradise with a lot of help. I forgot to mention that in getting to the beach we had to drive through a river. We got the old van a little stuck and needed some help from locals to push us out.

What a great time in the Word and with God's people. Should you be inspired to go with us on one of our next trip please follow the link below to find out more.

Beni swa l'Eternal!     Glwa Jezi!     Merci Signe!
