Gutter
Cleaning
In order to prevent damage to your home's exterior ad
interior, proper maintenance and cleaning of your home’s gutters and
downspouts is necessary. It helps prevent damage due to water
seeping through roofs, walls, and even foundations due to flodding
that can occur. It also keeps the exterior of your home looking good
by avoiding the runoff stains and those unsightly gardens that can
spring up due to accumulation of matter in the gutter
system.
Gutters and downspouts should be cleaned and checked
for signs of necessary repairs at least twice a year. Normally, the
best times to do this are late spring and late fall when trees have
taken a break from the seasonal outpouring. For those in a climate
of extreme rain, or living in a wooded area, you should probably
check them more frequently. It you suspect a problem, the time to
act is now. Repairs can be costly if left unchecked. Systems that
guard your gutters reduce the amount of debris entering the gutter,
yet these too need to be checked annually to remove any of the
smaller debris that makes its way into the system. Once a downspout
is clogged these systems are very difficult to unclog due to the
downspouts needing to be disassembled. We at I Can Do can provide
you with a service to clean your gutters properly. You can fill out
the form below and we can give you an estimate within 24 hours. We
also have included some tips on below on cleaning your own gutters.
These are drawn from a couple of DIY (Do It Yourself) websites.
Common Gutter Cleaning Supplies & Equipment
If you don’t have the proper supplies and you are
thinking about letting it go or simply rinsing the gutters with a hose,
you might want to reconsider. Avoiding the task completely might result in
unnecessary damage to your home. Using a garden hose in an attempt to
rinse away the accumulated debris might lead to a bigger mess than you
started with in the first place due to moving all the material through the
down spouts. They can become clogged and you will have an even greater
headache to deal with.
The following is a basic list of the tools
to have for this task: an extension ladder, work gloves, garden trowel
(preferably flat), trash bags or a bucket with an s-hook. It is also
recommended to have a plumber’s snake, and a garden hose with a sprayer
attachment. Step by Step Instructions to Cleaning the
Gutters and Downspouts
1. Where to Start.
Downspouts are typically located at the corners of the home are
good starting locations. It’s best to start near the downspout and work
away from it to avoid pushing additional debris into it although if you
are scraping the debris out of the gutter you can work either
way.
2.Set your extension ladder on level
ground. Your bucket with the s-hook can be atttached to the
ladder or if the gutter is anchored properly even to the gutter. If you
attachthe bucket to the gutter make sure that it does not tax the support
system of the gutter with its weight. This type of set up or one with a
trash bag minimizes clean up later. • The work gloves are to protect your
hands from any sharp objects in the gutters and downspouts. The gloves
will also help keep your hands clean.
3.Begin at the part of the gutter
closest to the downspout. Use the garden trowel or hand spade to
scoop out the debris. Place it into the bucket or trash bag. If any pieces
resist being scooped up, remove them carefully by hand. If you are
planning of disposing of the debris into your compost pile, then you need
to have a separate trash receptacle for metal objects such as roofing
nails.
4.Once you have removed all of the larger
debris, get the garden hose. Rinse the gutter in the direction of
the downspout using the spraying attachment on the hose. Spray the gutter
until no signs of debris remain.
• If the downspout is clogged, you will need to clear it.
Three options are available to you.
a. Simply try each one until you find one that works. It’s
probably easiest to begin by using the spray attachment on the hose to
direct water into the downspout from the bottom end. This may force any
clogs loose. b. You can also use the spray attachment on the hose to
direct water into the downspout from the upper end. This may also knock
the clog loose. c. If these steps do not work, then you need to work
a plumber’s snake into the downspout to loosen the debris and draw the
debris out.
5. Follow
these procedures for all of the gutters and downspouts on your home.
6. Inspect
your gutters and downspouts now for any signs of damage. Look for
holes, dents, or cracks. Anty damage should be noted and repaired ASAP.
Failure to do so will result in even greter damage and expenses. Should
you not be up to the task of doing the repairs yourself, there are many
contractors who will perform this task for you. At I Can Do, we
can make the basic repairs like re-fastening screws, bolts and nails and
clearing downspouts, but other repairs will need to be done by qualified
state licensed contractors.
7.Dispose of the debris by
placing it in your compost pile or in the trash.
Many places sell accessories for your gutters and downspouts
that can effectively lessen the time needed to complete the task of
cleaning the gutters and downspouts. A variety of protectors are on the
market that will deflect the leaves and other debris from the gutters. If
you do decide to install one, be sure that you purchase a model that can
easily be removed to allow for your biannual cleaning chore.
